From The Young Witness (dated 23 April 2010)

EQUESTRIAN Bridget Sell continued a tradition of achievement from this district’s riders at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show.

On Sunday, April 11, Sell won the title of Australian National Champion Lady Rider on her 16.2 hand, chestnut, thoroughbred gelding, ‘Universal Law’.

“Universal Law is a 13-year-old horse from Grenfell,” said Sell.

“He’s strong, fit and schooled and hitting his peak at the moment.

“There were a lot of good riders in that event and any of the riders participating were good enough to win.

“But I wasn’t the only one from Young to win at Sydney, The Wells family, Tracey and Talia, with ‘Westlake Grand Officer’ won classes and took home Reserve Champion and Brooke Stevenson won two Supreme Champion Awards with her two horses ‘Bamborough September Song’ and ‘Bamborough Country Charm’.

“My trainer is Sue Walker from Young and she trains under the guidance of Heath Ryan, who is an international rider.

“Sue is a very good rider and teacher and she won the award I just took out, that was back in 2000, I think,” said Sell.

Within a week of her win at the Royal, Sell and Universal Law had to compete again, this time in the Equestrian Australia NSW Horse Of the Year Show in the Sydney National Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18.

“It was a bit of a marathon for me,” said Sell.

“Having to backup to another high profile show so quickly was mentally draining and there was a lot of pressure placed on me because of the recent win.

“We competed on Saturday night and won NSW Adult Rider Of the Year.

“On Sunday Universal Law won NSW Hunter Hack Of the Year.

“That puts us in the team to compete at Werribee in December at the Equestrian Australia National Showhorse Championships where we’ll be competing against riders from all States and New Zealand.

“Last year my horse was runner-up so I hope I have the luck of the judges on the day, and they like the look of our combination because I do believe we will be able to put the performance in.

“So far I have been very lucky because I have had judges who have liked what they have seen with us,” said Sell.
