MORELAND HILLS, Ohio -- Olympic gold medalist Beezie Madden galloped to victory in the $75,000 American Gold Cup grand prix finals Sunday aboard Coral Reef Via Vo, topping a field of 23 starters.
With most of the 16 obstacles set at just over five feet in the first round, several riders had multiple faults, three withdrew without finishing the course and one horse fell. Only five entries were able to negotiate all of the obstacles without penalty faults.
New Zealand Olympic Team member Katie McVean, the first rider to compete in the timed jump-off, had three fences down for a score of 12 faults on her New Zealand Sport Horse, Delphi.
Riding with one hand in a brace after surgery to repair an accidental knife injury, Brown University student Brianne Goutel of New York City took the early lead with Remarkable Farms' Onira, taking down just one fence for a score of four faults and a time of 41.14 seconds.
Madden, next to compete on Via Vo, owned by Coral Reef Ranch of Rancho Sante Fe, Calif., also had four faults, but crossed the wire in 39.94 seconds to overtake Goutel's lead.
Ten-time Cleveland Grand Prix winner Margie Engle of Wellington, Fla., made a strong bid for first place with Gladewinds Farm's Indigo, but had two obstacles down for a score of eight faults. Goutel finished second, and Engle third. Fourth place went to Karen Cudmore of Omaha, Neb., on Southern Pride with eight jumping faults and three time faults for a total of 11, and McVean finished fifth.
Goutel also accounted for sixth place with the fastest four fault score in the first round on Nice de Prissey, owned by the Cloverleaf Farm of New York City.
"This is an exciting new horse for me," Madden said about her winning mount, "and it says good things for the future. I thought today's course was a good course, but it wasn't an easy course, and it was tough to go clean, obviously."
Madden, of Cazenovia, New York, won gold medals in team jumping at both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, and also earned the bronze in individual show jumping in 2008.
The American Gold Cup is ranked five stars by the U.S. Equestrian Federation, and is an FEI (International Equestrian Federation) qualifying event for the World Cup in Leipzig, Germany next April.
