NEW ZEALAND rider Caroline Powell was within a touching distance of the lead after the dressage phase was completed at the Burghely horse trials in England yesterday. The Scotland-based Powell and her grey mount Lenamore were second, just 0.4 of a penalty behind British leader Ruth Edge on Two Thyme.
Powell said it was possibly the best dressage test by the 17-year-old horse, on whom she placed fifth at Badminton and in the British Open at Gatcombe. The in-form Andrew Nicholson and Avebury were sitting in seventh on 45 penalties, nearly seven behind Edge. Annabel Wigley was 23rd on Black Drum with 51.7 penalties, while Mark Todd and Major Milestone were 29th equal with 52.7 penalties. Todd's return to Burghley after a 10-year break drew cheers from the crowds, and the legendary horseman said it didn't even feel like he had been away.
