New Zealand has won two bronze medals in the three-day event at the world equestrian games in Kentucky overnight.

Anchor man Andrew Nicholson and Nereo went clear in the final day's showjumping to secure a team bronze for New Zealand, and an individual bronze for himself.

Earlier, Mark Todd went clear with Grass Valley while Caroline Powell and Mac MacDonald finished with one fault to kickstart the New Zealand team medal challenge.

Nicholson was delighted with Nereo's performance.

"He's so good and consistent in all three phases and I have great confidence in him," he said.

"I hoped for an individual medal, and to finish in the top five as a team, so to get a team bronze as well is a bonus."

Todd was making his reappearance in Kentucky 32 years after his international debut, continuing his drive back at the top of the sport.

"When Gandalf (his comeback horse) died, I had to fast track this one as he was the only horse I had at this level.

"He did a three star event at Boekelo (The Netherlands) a year ago but the selectors wanted four star form for this event so he went to Badminton in the spring."

Three-times Badminton winner Todd and Grass Valley finished 18th on 68.6 points at Badminton.

Germany's Michael Jung rode a clear round to secure the individual gold medal in Kentucky. Jung and his horse, La Biosthetique-Sam FBW, led after the first day's dressage, then extended his lead after the cross-country yesterday.

Jung finished with just 33 faults overall, all of which came in dressage. Britain's William Fox- Pitt was second with 42, and Nicholson took the bronze with 43.5.

Fox-Pitt's performance helped lead Britain to the gold in the team event, with Canada second.
