Defending champion Lizzie Brown of Cambridge was unable to hang on to her title at the New Zealand One-Day Eventing Championships near Te Kauwhata over the weekend.
Brown had to settle for second place behind Canterbury farrier Brent Jury, who won the Forest Gate Trophy for the Advanced title on SE Big at Richfields Thoroughbred Farm.
Brown, the hot favourite, was leading after the dressage but she opted not to run her top horse Henton Attorney General in the cross country phase.
Instead, she finished on Push Play, saving Henton Attorney General for the upcoming Puhinui three-day event.
Bryce Newman, from Bulls, finished third on Bates Trademark and Clarke Johnstone, of Matangi, was fourth on Incognito.
Jury's win saw him move to joint top of the table in the elite Bell Tea Super League, alongside fellow Cantabrian Emily Butcher and Southern Ben.
Johnstone and Incognito move into third place, ahead of Brown and her two horses in fourth.
Next month's Puhinui three-day event marks the halfway stage in the year-long series and has more points on offer than last weekend's Te Kauwhata event.
Butcher did not ride Southern Ben at the weekend, but did win the intermediate title on My Shout.
And in a South Island three-peat, Jury's apprentice, James Avery, won the junior class with Amarillo. Mainland entrants won three of five titles on offer at Te Kauwhata. |
