New Zealander Andrew Nicholson showed his quality by winning two of the three advanced classes at the Weston Park Horse Trials in Shropshire on Sunday.
Wiltshire-based Nicholson took section K on Mr Cruise Control, and then followed it up with victory in section L on Shady Grey.
Nicholson, who is likely to be a major contender at the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials later this month, edged Piggy French and her World Equestrian Games horse Jakata into second with Mr Cruise Control.
The advanced section J category went to an in-form Oliver Townend, who guided Imperial Master home, while he also took an opportunity to give his main Badminton hope Ashdale Cruise Master a dressage and showjumping workout before withdrawing him ahead of cross-country.
World champion Michael Jung, meanwhile, won the international two-star competition in Compiegne, France on Leopin from New Zealand's Mark Todd (NZB Regent Lad) in second, with Belgium's Karin Donckers third.
