New Zealand dressage rider Penny Castle has ridden Gymstar One to fourth place in the Grand Prix freestyle at the Sydney CDI3*.
Castle, of Manawatu, and Gymstar One posted a score of 69%, and fellow Kiwi Vanessa Way, from Taranaki, was seventh on KH Arvan with 65.4%. The class was won by Rachael Sanna riding Jaybee Alabaster with 74.25%, with Brett Parbery and Victory Salute second with 73.7%. Mary Hanna and Umbro were third with 69.4%.
Also on Saturday, a New Zealand team of Christine Weal (Argyle) and Vanessa Way (Colonial Hot & Handsome) beat teams representing the Commonwealth, Australia, and Korea in the Horselands Team competition.
On Friday, Castle and Gymstar One were third in the Sydney CDI special, with Vanessa Way and KH Arvan ninth.
Equestrian Sports New Zealand high performance director Sarah Harris had plenty of praise for the 66.1% ride that saw Castle just behind winner Rachel Sanna on JB Alabaster (69.86).
"Castle showed she is very capable of a top 30 finish at the London Olympic Games in 2012 if she continues to enhance her performance at this rate," Harris said.
